Botchan comes from a well-to-do family in Tokyo. Mostly ignored by his parents -- who prefer his older, studious brother -- he lives a ranbunctious life though the neighbourhood, jumping from second floors and fighting local children over petting things. Once both parents have passed away, Botchan is sent to study physics, and eventually becomes a mathematics teacher at a middle school in Shikoku. After growing up in the modern and quickly westernising town of Tokyo, the rural and more traditional lifestyle throws him out. Soon he is embroilled in his colleague's drama, intrigue and villany, while also clashing with his own students due to his arrogance and short temper.

無鉄砲で正直者な主人公が、四国の田舎で中学校の教師をつとめるお話。
よくある学園ものかと思いきや、生徒との交流はほとんど物語られず、教師の間のトラブルがメイン。
全て江戸っ子の主人公目線で語られるので、とてもテンポ良く読み進めることができる。
登場人物が全て個性的で、悪者は悪者らしく、正義感は正義感らしく、良い人は良い人らしく描かれている。アニメ化を希望したい。
小難しいことを考えず、ただただ楽しめる小説。
清と主人公の仲むつまじさがとてもほほえましい。
